Woolfson conceived the original concept for the project, and subsequently became Parsons’ manager as well as his partner in musical crime. ‘Tales Of Mystery And Imagination – Edgar Allan Poe’, the LP, released in 1976, was the brainchild of Eric Woolfson, his main collaborator on the project being Alan Parsons, whom he met in 1975. Brunetière when analysing the material for tales and the incidents therein, out of the borders of the ‘mainway’ of life. As the Poetry Foundation biography page notes “Coevally with Baudelaire, and long before Conrad and Eliot, he explored the heart of darkness.” In his introduction to the 1908 edition of Poe’s ‘Tales Of Mystery And Imagination’, Irish writer Pádraic Colum notes that Poe’s works are well described as ‘on the margin’, a phrase used by French critic M. His last days are shrouded in mystery, passing away in Baltimore…Andrew Eldritch, leader and songwriter for gothic rock band The Sisters Of Mercy wrote a line “I think he’s still in Baltimore” for the song ‘Something Fast’ on the album ‘Vision Thing’ – Perhaps a Poe reference? Poe certainly influenced literary, theatrical and musical culture, the appeal lying in his strong sense of black despair, a decaying decadence, fantastical imagery and the macabre. ‘Tales Of Mystery And Imagination’ is a musical concept album inspired by the nineteenth century American author Edgar Allan Poe and named after a posthumous collection of his works that was first published in 1902.Įdgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 and died in 1849, his relatively short life yielding a body of work which is to be cherished, an inspiring and breathtaking legacy.
